- About Us
The Bangor YMCA Youth and Family Enrichment Department is a comprehensive programs design encouraging a broad range of group services that include enrichment, intervention, family support, social skill enhancement, community service, and leadership development. The department has a unique position within the community. It has been one of the few consistently group focused programs within our region for the past 20 years. The Y values the individual but also understands that group development can only take place within the natural learning laboratory of a group itself and the inclusion and information gained from a healthy group can be extremely powerful in respect to self-awareness, leadership development, altruism, and a heightened sense of belonging.
Many of our groups follow an adventure based learning approach and highlight the importance of looking closely at changes in respect to affect, behavior, and cognition. The sequence of our groups can create drastically transformative changes within individual lives and produce lifelong friendships, vocational interests, and a general motivation toward positive community service.
All program participants receive a FREE, 6-month youth membership and an opportunity to be a part of other programs within the Bangor YMCA.
Neighborhood Club (2-5 graders): One of our Y’s longstanding programs for encouraging social skills, recreation, and productive group skills to 2nd through 5th grade students. This is also a great introduction to the Y and its many programs. These co-ed groups meet weekly throughout the school year. All group participants receive a free, 6-month, youth membership if desired.
TOP (6-12 graders): Formerly the OPT program, these groups are co-ed for both middle and high school students. These groups meet weekly throughout the school year and promote a wide range of opportunities for personal growth, peer socialization, and adventure based learning. All group participants receive a free, 6-month, youth membership if desired.
EarlyAct (6-8 graders) and Interact (9-12 graders): These groups are supported by the Bangor Area Breakfast Rotary Club and focus on community and international service and volunteerism. Over time our Interact Club has generated thousands of dollars through their fundraising efforts to bring positive changes within our community and the world. This is a terrific opportunity for youth to experience the value of creative change, fundraising, and networking with local businesses.
Jumpstart (Youth aged 10-17): This group is facilitated through collaboration with the Bangor Police Department, Juvenile Probation, and parents. This longstanding program offers an 8-week, strategic design with mentors for students who need help making better decisions, have had contact with law enforcement but have not been charged with a crime, the ”followers” of friends who have made poor choices, and first-time non-violent, juvenile offenders. All participants are aged 10-17 and have a distinct need to intervention and diversion for the path they are on. After completing the program, participants do not progress through the court system.
Afterschool Adventure Program (4-5 graders, 6-8 graders): This program employs an experiential learning environment (learning by doing) to promote self-esteem, healthy decision making, and offer opportunities for relationship development and leadership. This is presented in segmented sessions throughout the school year.
Y Outreach (3-8 graders, 9-12 on a drop-in basis): An after school center for the young people aged 8-18 of the Capehart Community. This drop-in program provides a safe place to socialize, complete homework, utilize computers and games, as well as take part in scheduled transportation to the main Y facility in Bangor for more formal program participation.
